If you are like me, you probably asked yourself this question at one point. It never made sense to me why some people would be born with problems and others wouldn’t. I mean if God created us and was forming in our mother’s womb’s, wouldn’t we be perfect? It is hard to understand why a perfect God, would create something that wasn’t perfect in every way.
These questions bothered me so much, so I decided I would try to find out. I figured the first way to begin was to look at what it says about birth in the bible. There are verses like Jeremiah 1:5, that says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Well, what I get from this is that God took part in all our design. So, that means that He made us this way for a reason, so those that are born with disabilities are born that way for a purpose. However, that can’t be right. Why would God intentionally design people in a way that would hinder them?
I guess the only way that we could try to understand this is by understanding those with the disabilities. What do we learn from them? So, I asked my mom who works with kids that have autism, what stands out, what have you learned from them? She told me that they are very intelligent, innocent, and they enjoy life. I personally didn’t understand that, how could they enjoy life, when they have this disability? So, I asked some other people that work with children with disabilities, and all of them seem to find something amazing about these kids, that other kids without the disability just don’t have.
So, after learning this it begs the question, did He design them this with on purpose?
Well if you look at the story in John 9 it gives us the answer.
John 9:1-5 says, As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
So, after reading these verses we start to learn something. That people with disabilities are not born that way because God is punishing them, but instead it is so that they can show the world the love of God.
Now I know this sounds crazy, but let’s think about this for a second. What sets those with disabilities apart, from the ones that don’t have any? Well the first thing is that if you have a disability you usually stand out. This makes it easy for people to recognize the qualities of those individuals. Another quality that they have is that they draw you in, it is so easy to love those with disabilities.
So, even if you are born with a disability no matter what it is, God has a purpose for your life. You can be an inspiration to someone, or simply show them a little piece of God’s love.
